Put data centers in perspective.

Florida already supports thousands of stores, restaurants, gas stations, warehouses, irrigated lawns, farms and golf courses. A modern data center deserves scrutiny—but it should be judged by the same yardstick.

Florida locations and facilities

Approximate current counts. Data centers rank near the bottom—not because impacts are irrelevant, but because Florida already operates far larger networks of commercial sites.

“Malls” has no single authoritative statewide definition, so it is excluded from the ranked count. Florida has hundreds of enclosed malls and thousands of broader shopping centers; mixing those categories would be misleading. Amazon includes fulfillment, sortation, distribution and delivery facilities.

Water: the scale people leave out

Million gallons per day (MGD). These categories are not identical: agriculture and golf figures are statewide withdrawals; residential landscape irrigation is a transparent estimate; dry-cooled data-center cooling is a design condition.

Perspective: Florida golf-course irrigation alone was reported at about 187 million gallons per day. A properly specified closed-loop data center with dry heat rejection can use essentially no day-to-day water for cooling.
The engineering matters

“Closed loop” must mean the right thing.

Specify this

  • Direct-to-chip liquid cooling
  • Sealed recirculating coolant loop
  • Dry coolers that reject heat to outside air
  • No evaporative cooling tower
  • No continuous cooling-water makeup
  • Meter and publicly report remaining domestic water use

Do not confuse it with this

  • A “closed” internal loop connected to an evaporative tower
  • Cooling-tower evaporation
  • Regular blowdown and chemical treatment
  • Continuous replacement water
  • Unreported peak-day withdrawals
  • Marketing language without a binding design standard
The honest argument is not that data centers have no impact. It is that design determines impact—and Florida already accepts much larger land and water footprints for ordinary consumption, landscaping and recreation.

Method, limits and sources

Why some numbers say “approximately”

Store networks change weekly. Commercial directories also count store-within-a-store pharmacies, campuses, buildings and proposed projects differently. The page uses rounded, current planning counts and labels the 123 data-center figure as operational records. It does not pretend that every site has the same acreage, electrical load or water demand.

Why there is no fake statewide land total

Florida does not publish audited parcel acreage for every chain on this page. Applying one assumed acreage to every location would produce a dramatic—but unreliable—number. Location counts are shown directly; land claims should be added only after parcel-level GIS analysis.

Why retail water is not ranked

Chain-specific Florida water totals are generally not public. EPA reports a median supermarket water-use intensity of 31 gallons per square foot per year, but applying that benchmark across mixed formats would be a model, not measured consumption.

Location figures other than Publix and data centers are rounded working counts assembled from company locators and commercial location directories in September 2026. They should be refreshed before use in paid advertising, testimony or formal filings.
